Very normal, I have a crush on my best friend now, (I'm a girl, he's a guy it happens) When you spend A LOT of time around some one of the opposite sex (or, if you're gay, the same sex) it's only natural that one or both will start to have feelings for the other. I wouldn't say I'm in love, or at least not yet, but it could work out. And even if it doesn't work out between you two, that doesn't mean it has to be the end of the friendship as well. A break up is only awkward if you make it awkward. So really, there shouldn't be a probem with just trying it out and see if it works
