I've been shy all my life, and have seen many shy people picked on. I lucked out and was 6'3" and 200 lbs at the start of high school, so I got to defend my fellow nerds/shy people from the bullies while never having to fight anyone.
As for a solution...be friends with all the other shy people, they understand you.
