Is it normal to be happy one day and depressed the next?

  • Let me assure you that you don't have bi polar (despite the many expected responses about how you might have it). bi polar disorder is when a person feels depressed for weeks, sometimes months, before hitting a manic episode. A manic episode can also last weeks, months. It is NOT a day to day thing. Depression will come with a change in diet (over\under eating), feelings of guilt/sadness/suicide and sleeping more than usual. Manic episodes are when you don't get enough sleep but are still not tired, constant high energy, feeling "on top of the world", over confident, overly talkative, spontaneous, and engage in risky behaviors (spending too much, gambling).

I think you're adjusting to a huge change in your life (going to school) and have some emotions to sort through. good luck

    • No, it's not always on a long-term basis. It can be a day-to-day thing, depending on what kind you have. I have been diagnosed with it and it is a day-to-day thing for me. Sometimes it's even worse than that--recently I've been having a couple of mood swings daily. If what you're saying is true, the two doctors who diagnosed and have been treating me for it misdiagnosed me and I have something else I've never heard of (because I've not heard of any other mental disorder that causes extreme mood swings).
