Is it normal to be completely different than your family?

Alright so basically for the entirety of my life, I have been somewhat of a black sheep. Now that I'm 20 and (for the most part) grown-up, I have realized that apart from looks, I am a COMPLETELY different person than anyone in my family. They are conservative, I am liberal. They are religious, I am atheist. The list goes on and on. I just don't get it. Is it normal to end up this way? I honestly hate it, because it causes so many arguments, and just knowing that I am looked down on is totally defeating.

Is It Normal?

  • Adults are easily influenced , today's generation is a lot smarter because people live their own way and they're open to other possibilities. I know a lot of people who are different from everyone in their family. Including me . So I'd say it's normal :)

  • I've met lots of other "black sheep " . Now that all my sibs and their kids are grown up , I have nothing to do with my sisters but I'm still close to my brothers and my nieces and nephews . It took me over 40 yrs to finally learn its healthier to cut some ppl out of your life even if they are related to you and others that have nothing in common with it's ok to only see at family events and not go out of your way to see at any other time .

  • I think it's normal. I'm really different from my family too with completely different views on every single topic, as well as completely different hobbies and interests. Yes, I know it can be quite annoying. The most annoying part is to find something to talk about with them.

  • I wouldn't say it's abnormal, I'm the black sheep of my family too. Everyones conservative either Protestant or catholic, most of them are yuppies, one of my cousins is trying to become a teenage pop star. x.x yet I somehow ended up liking alternative fashion and body mod, I'm agnostic, pro choice, and my politics and philosophy differs from my family's in almost every way. I just play nice without compromising around my family and they seem to accept me, on the surface at least.
