Is it normal to be called in for “jury duty”?

Just got this letter in the mail. Says they want me to go to this courthouse and serve on a jury?? They want me to decide if this person is “Guilty” or “Not Guilty”?? Have you ever had to serve Jury Duty before? This is my first time so don’t know how it works?? How much do they pay? And how long does a trial usually last for? Also I do have a disability so if I’m disabled, could I possibly get dismissed and not have to be in the Jury?

I was excused, I'm a brit and they don't even call serving or ex policemen as they think they may be biased.

The answers to all your questions depend on where you live.

Most people who serve on juries have never done so before, so the rules and procedures should all be explained to you when you attend the courthouse.

Don't ignore the summons. Contact whatever office is stated on the summons to ask your questions and to explain why you think your disability would make it difficult or impossible for you to act as a juror.

You get like 20 bucks for it haha. Some jobs will cover your loss if you give them the check and it's a work day. Most dont though. Ususlly only factory's do.

Jury duty can be as short as a day or as long as a week. Chances are you wont even have to do it. Btw appearantly its illegal to ignore the summons. I accifejtky did that when I was 18. I set it down went to play xbox and remembered it like 2 months later whoops.

Mine was for 16 weeks. I think jurors should be trained people because a) if I was on trial, I wouldn't want a random selection of clueless people judging my fate, and b) 16 fucking weeks?? Fuck that shit, I have a goddamn job where people are relying on me.

I have served numerous times. The pay like 5 dollars and the length of the trial depends on the seriousness of the case. But even Weinstein's trial only lasted like two weeks. Most don't go longer than a week. One day to pick the jury, a couple days for the trial and usually no court on Friday. Just because you got called in for jury duty does not mean that you will get picked. But look at who is there and who gets picked and then pray that you never, ever need to gamble your freedom based on 12 people on a jury.

It should say in the letter what reasons you can use to be excused. I could get excused because I'm a sole trader, but that might not apply wherever you're from.

This post reminds me of an old user named bugsforbreakfast and how he said he got out of jury duty when he showed up dressed as a Devil Butterfly Police Clown. Dang that guy was funny. Maybe Op should try that? XD
