Is it normal to be called emo?

People call me emo all the time and really it's annoying the hell out of me. I am a guy with brown bangs that don't cover up my eyes, but they cover my forehead. I don't wear dark clothes, or cut myself, or even scratch myself. I don't write sad stories or listen to Gothic music. I don't wear chains and ripped jeans. So I'm not emo at all. Is this normal to be called emo all of the sudden by random people?

    emo's died out years ago. if they're going to call you anything they should call you a snag

    One thing that drove me crazy in highschool were the stereotypes. And if you show them that it bothers you, it's likely that it will only encourage them. Just ignore it.

        Yeah same. There was one heavily depressed guy who wore makeup, stockings on his arms, black clothing and chains but he was called a freak. The stereotype emo wasn't coined till much later, long after I had left school.

          I always thought of it as goths being the outsiders, and emos being the ones who wanted to be like that but wouldn't go all the way.

          Like a "pop goth" or something.

    People often call me gothic. I don't consider myself gothic but it doesn't bother me. I think people just feel the need to label things. Don't let it get to you. That's just how people are and probably always will be. Just be happy with yourself. You are who you are.
