Is it normal to be book smart but do stupid things?

I have an excellent GPA and people say I'm smart whenever I'm in the classroom, but whenever I'm I. Social situations or just common sense, I
am a fool. I appear to be an idiot when making certain descisions.

Excuse any grammatical errors...

  • I went to high school with this girl who was a straight A student, certified genius. So it baffled me when she was completely ditzy, dumb blonde, clumsy and awkward in social situations. (I remember one story where she was cleaning her bathroom and her mum used the expression "use some elbow grease" and she spent 20 minutes looking for a bottle of it) I'm sure it has something to do with the chemistry and makeup of the brain and how it functions.

    • Hah! That's a riot. My sister was a lawyer and a Phd. in philosophy, but didn't know she had to put oil in her car, and burned out the motor.

  • There's a difference between book smart and street smart/common sense.

  • I have a brother like this. He is brilliant but the biggest moron. I guess you were given a good intelligence to make up for your lack of common sense.

  • That's funny because I'm book dumb and street smart so to speak. Most democrats are book smart and life stupid while most Republicans are life smart and book stupid. Republicans only read and remember whats most important in life.

  • Very common, given today's education factories, which just want want to mold young minds to fit into jobs, instead of teaching them to think. There are many types of intelligence.

  • im like this, like somebody says "hey go get this out of my locker" and like its right in my face, and i dont notice it.

  • Of course, it is. Not all things in life are mastered best by thinking things through rationally; and one should not put book smartness or being an intellectual on a pedestal or think that being smart means that things will be easy for them.

I see myself as a smart person, and I have not been good at social situations. Many a time, I have noticed how bad I have been at having a clever reply to some remark, compared to other people.
