Is it normal to be best friends with a twin sister?

I'm a guy, and I have a fraternal twin sister (non-identical) who is basically my best friend.

So you have an idea of how we are, we are really, really close to each other, like completely best friends and we do almost everything together. we've always been this way since we were little and neither of us like being apart from the other for much time. my sister even got our school to let her change lockers to the one next to mine. I'd rather hang out with her than any of my other friends, and she feels the same way. we dont do anything bad together, like we aren't dating or having sex or anything, we're just great friends.
Our parents made us go to a psychiatrist or psychologist or whatever a couple years ago but it was really just a waste of money. We're still as much friends as we ever have been. We were adopted together when we were babies, which maybe has something to do with it I guess?

anyway, is it normal?

  • In your situation it is "normal". Children form better bonds with people if they receive the right amount of positive psychical contact as infants. A disproportionate number of people that were adopted have issues forming close bonds later in life. It is not the adoption as such. It is because of the lack of physical intimacy compared to a non adoptive situation. In your situation I would suspect that because the person you were closet to was your sister that is the person you formed the closed bond with. Not unlike the the psychology of "Imprinting"(read up!). Though there is some debate on the significance of a direct comparison to human infants. I think therapy is a good idea. Not to break you of it, but to try to explain to you the mechanism behind it. It always helps to know yourself better. And if you are not comfortable with the direction a particular therapist is taking. Find a new one. You have a right to get the information you feel you need. And to take a reasonable amount of time to explore different directions until you are comfortable it they are right or wrong.

  • I went to high school with a pair of twins like you. They went everywhere together, and we rarely saw them apart. At the time, it seemed a odd to us, but now I know about the bond that some twins have. I'd say it's completely normal.

  • Yeah it seems perfectly fine to me as well, I wish I had a twin brother or sister as well who is just naturally understanding about everything this way.

  • I'd say it's normal. I'm close with my brother even though he is a pro-american Christian conservative and I'm an anti-American Nazi atheist. I find it odd this is even a question....
