Is it normal to be ashamed/embarassed about your writing?

I write fanfiction. I'm afraid that when I tell people that I write fanfiction and they go to check out my work (whether they are friends or family) I'm scared that they'll think I'm weird. I write gay romance and other mature content involving swears, blood, violence, and killing. Then again, I also write some childish adventure stuff as well. All my stories revolve around Mario and Megaman. I just don't want people looking at me in a different light because I write weird things.

Is It Normal?

  • I felt very uncomfortable the first time I had my father read one of my screenplays. My screenplay was about how a significant other can have a lasting effect on one's life. How years after two people have ceased all communication, they still carry remnants of every relationship. It shows that the way your significant other goes about their current relationship(with you) allows you to see through a window of their romantic past. Essentially, all the insecurities they show, all the non-normative sexual positions they know, and every expectation they have are amalgamations of their their past loves. Which to me is an incredibly beautiful and complex facet of humanity.

Anyway, the very first scene shows a man, so in love with his girlfriend it is nearly inconsiderate, performing messy cunnilingus on a girlfriend that, as a result of monotony, is mentally already out of the relationship.

At first I was scared to have my father read this story. I knew after this my father would no longer see me as his innocent little son--the youngest. In the end that was why I allowed him to read it. It displayed effectively that I was now an adult with deep personal thoughts and problems. At that moment, in his eyes, I became a man. You should never be afraid of what your writing might say about you. It is a clear view to others of the person you truly are.

  • Yes, it's normal - ESPECIALLY when you're creating childish or bizarre content.

I think if a friend told me their hobby was writing gay fanfiction about Mario / Megaman, I would look at them in a different light.

I'd suggest only sharing your work with people you think will appreciate it.

  • Why would you feel the need to tell them that you write fanfiction? Most people just upload it to a fanfiction site and let the regulars on the website decide whether it's good or needs work.

Also, can you leave a link to one of them?
    :)

  • Yeah I feel the same about my art, which is pretty bad since i want to start studying it professionally

It's worse when you don't have work that appeals to everyone, but we gotta get over it eventually to be successful
