  • I understand that anti-feminizm is a response to a new wave of feminists that don't really believe in equality between the genders and can be extremist in their ideologies. However, something which anti-feminists often ignore is that these types of people represent a minority of the larger feminist population and branding all feminists as having the same ideals is simply incorrect.

      • If it's equal rights you're looking for, try the term "Egalitarian"! Some people who are against third wave feminism but are still for equal rights use this term to describe themselves.

        • What about certain issues that are specifically in regards to women though? like it’s technically equal for both men and women to not be allowed to get abortions, so wouldn’t advocating for that require feminism? Idk

          • I personally thought the term Egalitarian meant 'equal rights on both sides where they each need it'. An example of this would be both supporting equal rights for women to be pro-life, but also advocating equal rights for men, to be recognized when they're on the receiving end of domestic abuse and/or sexual harassment instead of being ignored or shrugged off. It's kind of like a label advocating for equal rights on both sides, while openly rejecting the label of feminist (but not exactly rejecting ALL of its ideas). Sorry if this explanation was kind of complicated, but I hope I helped you understand better what I meant.

      • I don't know if this clears things up, but one of the reasons many feminists use the term "feminism" is because most of the root causes of problems that both men and women face come from the fact that civilization used to be overwhelmingly patriarchal. Things that were masculine were seen as superior to anything feminine.

For example, men commit suicide more often than women because asking for help is seen as feminine and it makes them weak. You see this in our culture all the time. We tell people that they're being a "sissy" if they're not strong or tell people that they're "fighting like a girl". At the end of the day, we as a society need to remove the idea that feminine is less, that people who are masculine can't exhibit feminine traits without being weak, and perhaps abolish the ideology that asking for help and communicating is feminine at all.

I personally see myself as a feminist, but most of my work in gender-based activism has been awareness about how men face mental health issues and sexual abuse. It annoys me that most people approach me and assume I don't work with men at all.

        • fighting like a girl means you're fighting weak because men are biologically stronger, and are required to be stronger than women

          • Sometimes. Have you ever seen a situation where someone, for example, is playing pool badly and someone else comments that they "play like a girl"? Pool has nothing to do with physical strength or biology. Also, just because a group of people can't do something as well doesn't mean that they're bad at it. Feminine additionally does not equal lesser because all forms of strength are not physical.

I concede, however. Does my point not still stand with that point aside?

            • physical strength, and pool is HITTING a ball, is it not? i also have to argue that men are stronger mentally too. men may not be smarter than women, women may not be smarter than men, but men can take action on their ideas. who took us to the moon?

              • Have you ever played pool? If you have a normal functioning arm you're completely fine, and if anyone ever hits the ball with their full physical strength they're more likely to miss. You spend most of the game tapping the pool balls.

The "stronger mentally" thing is full-on sexism. Men took us to the moon in the 60s. Are you aware of the disadvantages that women faced in the 60s or do I honestly have to give you a history lesson? Both men and women are on equal footing in terms of mental strength. The fact that you even said that in the year 2018 is why feminism needs to exist.
