Depression does funny things to your head. It can make you feel so low and worthless that you feel as if your mere existence is a burden to those around you, and that you'd be doing everyone a favor if you removed yourself from the equation. To say that all suicide is selfish would be a failure to consider the unimaginable pain and inner torment another person may be feeling. Some people use suicide as a tool for revenge and other selfish reasons... But I think many more are infinitely saddened by the idea of hurting their loved ones, and honestly feel conflicted about it. That some go through with the act anyway speaks to their level of despair. It's selfish to call someone selfish for committing suicide.
That said, it's an entirely different story when you have children you're responsible for. No matter how bad you feel, it is your duty to put their needs first, no matter what you have to do to get through it.
