Yeah your right, most people don't know about that and think I am just named after the word. My Mom is a Anthropologist, and while studying mythology she fell in love with the story and named me after Echo in the story.
That's a truly beautiful way to be named. So many people must be jealous of you! Rather than a parent opening the baby book and choosing the first name, or someone naming their child a boring and dull normal name because they're too scared what society might think. Your Mum is obviously a romantic and ambitious person who is not afraid to stand up to society's standards - those are always the people who do well in life and you will too.
Those kids are probably just jealous you have such a lovely and unique name. Trust me, when you're in primary school kids will give you shit for anything different, anything that sets you apart from the status quo. Trust me, I was the resident "weirdo" in my high school... artistic, goth, didn't wear makeup, ate healthy bagged lunches... yeah people actually made fun of me for eating healthy. It's childish and it's all based on fear.
Buncha scared little elementary school kids get up to middle school. They're in bigger classes dealing with all sorts of new people and uncomfortable situations. How do they handle it? They start by singling out the outsiders to give themselves a common enemy, they put themselves above other people to give them protection from being cast out themselves. Without a "them" there is no reason for "us" to exist.
Best advice I can give you? Don't let a bunch of ignorant little shits change you. If you want to change your name for yourself, that's one thing. If you're only doing it because of the reception it has received, then wait a while. Go to college, get out in the adult world. See how people respond to you there before you make your decision, because looking at the responses here it seems most people think your name is awesome. I know I do, hell I'd trade you. Your middle name is one of my favorite characters from mythology.
I know what it's like to be bullied. My nickname all through school was "The Anti Boner". But I didn't let that change me, in fact it made me even more resolute to be myself no matter what anyone else tried to tell me, and in the end, people started to respect me for it.
Is it normal To be angry at my parents for naming me this.
