Everyone goes through times in their lives that force them to be alone, sometimes more alone than they'd like. You aren't being stupid. On the contrary, I think you're being wise in realizing that being alone and loneliness are not the same thing. It's also very self-aware of you to acknowledge that loneliness is starting to get to you a bit.
Do you have other ways in which you could be around new people -- taking classes, getting a job, going to the gym, something like that? Doing things you care for can also help. If you write, paint or play music, you might come to relish your solitude.
