I'm not goth or emo, in fact, I'm a bit of a geek. Hot Topic is the only place I've ever been able to find merchandise for Invader Zim, Scott Pilgrim, Big Bang theory and other stuff.
The way the nearest one to me is structured, the only stuff you can see from the outside are the glowing skulls, spraypaint, sharp jewelery, et cetera. Kind of makes you think twice about getting within forty feet. Once you get in, it turns out all that stuff was just the window display (not for sale) and you enter a spacious, well-lit cornucopia of semi-mainstream cult classic merch. Near the back is where you get the studded bracelets, weird music and absurdly large piercings, but it's not NEARLY as dark and intimidating as it was from the outside.
I now return regularly for shopping bags full of Death Note T-shirts and GIR plushies. Or I just put them inside the Half-Life 2 tote bag I got two months ago.
Is it normal to be afraid to go in Hot Topic
