It does seem weird that you developed this phobia despite having grown up with cats. How do you feel about kittens? They're pretty nonthreatening, right? Maybe if you got a kitten it would help overcome your phobia. Of course it would grow into a cat, but you'd still see it as your cute little friend. (That's my theory anyway.)
