Is it normal to be afraid of being underwater at all?

I'm perfectly fine if i'm above water, weather it be a pool, or a lake, or whatever, but as soon as i go underwater for whatever reason, I immediately start panicking. I waste tons of air panicking, and I try to go to the surface as soon as possible. I would never go under the water intentionally. One time I got dunked, and freaked out so bad. I was screaming and struggling underwater and I ended up passing out. Is it normal to be so afraid of this?

Yes, it's a pretty normal fear considering drowning is a thing. While I am okay going under water as long as the water level is no higher than shoulder/neck level and I am going under by my own will and am not being held down, dunking makes me panic as well. I always HATED it as a kid and regardless of how many times I would yell at them to stop and was obviously scared, they'd laugh and keep doing it. I still think that's messed up and it makes me mad to this day.

When you have an irrational fear.
    face it head on.
    in your case snorkel.
    then take a scuba class.
