Is it normal to be abused?

I was mildly abused as a kid/teen. Stepdad would manhandle me, hit me sometimes, a real dick of a guy. Mom didn't know. I thought it was normal. I didn't have a dad before, I didn't know.

Like, how common is this? I thought it was pretty normal. Mom was abused by her mom, my boyfriend was treated roughly, though he said it wasn't too bad, it happens a lot, right? I know it's very wrong, but is it normal?

  • I would say it's common, but not normal.

  • The sad truth is that it is common. However, it isn't normal.

  • Not normal but like pretty much everyone I talk to had been abused as a kid, either physically, emotional, sexually, or more than 1 of those. It’s weird to me because my family is so normal, I started to think that being abused was more common than being well taken care of. I really hope not.

    • Yeah, that's why I asked. It seems stranger to have a happy, functional family.

      • Yes :(
I wouldn’t say my family was happy and functional but compared to some of the stories I’d heard from friends I felt very lucky with what I got. I hope you’re doing better now.

  • As a well respected parent around my community I can gladly say that I abuse my kids every chance I get! It makes them well rounded for the future and they do exactly what they're told with no fuss. 10/10 would say that its okay that you were beat and no one should feel bad for you!
