Is it normal to be absolutely obsessed with iqs?

I am a young woman, and have loved IQ tests since I was like 8, because I always score so high on them. My most recent test showed a score of 161, so that's the number I have stuck with. The thing is, whenever I make a new friend, I always wonder what their IQ is, and try to get them to take a test. Sometimes I feel bad that they score so low, but then in retrospect, it helps my self-esteem. I feel that I am probably the SMARTEST person I know.

Is It Normal?

Excuse me. I am sorry to distract you from your self-satisfaction, but, I noticed that you have ended your sentence with a preposition. This is incorrect.

    • Some of us who actually speak English realize that there are many minor grammatical nuances that are frowned upon, but are however, commonly used and accepted. A smart person knows how to fit in.

So that who may fit in, Dear? You are the one who is bragging about your superior intelligence. You are such a lofty individual. Ironically, you form sentences no better than a third grader. Additionally, you have inserted this tautology in your comment to me ("who actually speak English")... I am deducting these sloppy grammar/style points from your self-proclaimed "Big Brain Stature" and dropping you down to a score of "100"(average).

          • Hey now! No one can afford to eat these sort of broad-knowledge deficits and still be considered a well-rounded intellect. The very concept of "genius" is currently under debate. While Einstein might be considered a math genius, if he couldn't have communicated properly in his native language, he would not have been considered a "genius" but, an "idiot savant". Memorization and creative ability are greater in idiot savants, but, that does not equal true intelligence. You can teach a parrot to say, "Pretty bird",by repeating the phrase to them over and over again until they memorize it and utter it. Is that bird a genius for indicating an ability to mimic human speech? No. If that bird could, however, have an unrehearsed conversation with anyone about anything and demonstrate instant understanding of what is being said, that bird would, in fact be a genius. Just because someone can memorize a bunch of facts and trivia does not mean that they truly have a high intelligence quotient. If they cannot intelligently communicate these ideas to others in a way that makes sense, they are just cycling through rote data like a bird in a cage.

            • I'm not picking on you at all, Gems, but isn't learning the rules of grammar and spelling akin to memorising facts?

And, to add my tuppence to the debate in general, I don't think genius and intelligence are as related as people think. To me, genius is the ability to make connections between seemingly unconnected things and to see these connections where most people cannot. Although I agree that if someone possesses intelligence, genius is often more easily manifested.

            • I hope you are not implying that IQ tests generally test your ability to memorize facts and trivia. On the contrary, they usually present you with an assortment of sequences and have you find logic therein. Rote data is no help, really, when you are being asked to guess what comes next in a series of shapes/numbers/color configurations. Perhaps you should try taking an IQ test?

        • I am loving this. It seems that I have met a like-minded person. ;) Sadly, I fail to see what is tautological about my snide remark, and hope that we are not merely using big words for the sake of sounding overly intelligent. The reason I do not always strive to sound like a geek is that I really do not want to be one. I realize that IQ tests are flawed, but one thing about them is, they measure your intellect due to your ability to deduce and reason, not by the level of your English education. If you honestly feel I have an IQ of 100, I accept that. Let me return the compliment by saying that I think your IQ is indeed above average. (Or else you're overly educated.) While most people on here struggle to spell even the simplest of words, you have a superior vocabulary, and know your grammar. You also don't back away from a good argument. In the real world, that is, if we actually knew each other, we might be friends. :)

  • Reducing all the intricacies of human intelligence to a single number, so you can say "I'm smarter"? What nonsense. The only thing your high IQ test results prove is that you're good at doing IQ tests - well done, pat on the back, now go and apply your intelligence, or it's useless.

  • I got a 155 or more on an official test I took at a psychiatrist's office as a child. I'm more obsessed because it's absolutely defined my life. I see my genius as a curse that constantly afflicts me, as it leads my thoughts to deep, dark places that no one else around me can relate to. It's very isolating. Hearing what someone's IQ is usually helps me understand them.

  • Oh so you try to find the least educated people to becaome your friends and jave them take an IQ test just to make yourself feel better and then you googled a cheat cheat for the test to make you sound like a genius even though you cheated on a test that nobody gives a fuck about anyways? Wow lame douchebag -btw my IQ was 130 when i was 12 a d yippee i didnt cheat because i didnt give a fuck about how well i did

  • Your absolutelee rite, i am jest a jeluss insecurre moreon, an reely imature two. However, at least I am not nearly as truculent as you, and had no idea that one's supposed intellect was important enough to get into a dog-eat-dog internet brawl over.
Your analogy about the college professor was highly amusing, and yes, I get your point. However, that kind of went without saying. Obviously someone who cannot spell a single word, lacks intelligence. Yet people like you and me cannot be judged on the basis of our writing, because we do spell the majority of our words correctly.
Finally, I am delighted that I have become so "dear" to you through our little discussion. Almost moved to tears in fact. If you were only here, I would give you a great big hug! Have a great day Gems! By the way, your parents had wonderful taste in names! It is doubly appropriate since your writings are all such gems! I think you just may be my new best friend; however, I like to know the gender of all my friends so...would you mind enlightening me? ( I'm doing a study on whether men or women are smarter.)

  • "Uh-oh, looks like someone wrote a not-so-perfect sentence themselves. I don't think you can "refer about" something. ;) And I am just saying that from your overall opinion of IQ tests, you seem to think they measure your ability to memorize trivia, and construct sentences. Anyone that scored 179 on a REAL IQ test (not some internet mock-up) would be famous. I scored 183 on some ridiculous 25 question IQ test one time, but I certainly don't view that as my IQ."
    ----------------------------------------------------------

First of all, I am not the douche bag on this thread proclaiming that I am smarter than other people. You are. I can afford to make a few errors as long as 99.9% of my writing is accurate. Since you wanna put all of us in our place, the onus is on you to prove that you are better than us. Judging from your writing, you are not. Too bad that life experience questions couldn't be added to a standard Mensa test because you are clearly very immature and would fail that part. Why is my I.Q. test result so important to you? You are clearly a very jealous and insecure person... I believe you said as much.

Second of all, you have no idea who I am. How can you say that I "would be famous" in terms of my I.Q. score? Are you looking for the name, "Gems", by chance, in the media regarding this? Sorry. Gems is not my real name. Are you surprised? Somehow, I knew you would be...

  • i once got 156 on a iq test....that was in 9th grade....i've seriously gotten dumber by the years.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Most of the IQ tests are different each time. Some could find one of the tests easy and the other not so easy. I dont think IQ matters on tests unless they are tests in real situations.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Most IQ tests are compiled by unqualified people. Go do a test by Mensa. only then will I be mildly impressed. IQ tests don't judge much, it doesn't prove you're smart enough to apply your knowledge, just that, while sat in a comfy desk chair, you can answer match questions..

  • Normal. When you're that good at something it's hard not to obsess, just be humble about it.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I hope you were smart enough to do a proper IQ test. Those that ask "which word doesn't belong" (or something like that) test your wisdom, which has nothing to do with IQ.

Same thing with tests that show you words and you have to know its synonym. Such tests only tests if the person has ever heard or seen the words somewhere or not.

Proper IQ test should test your logic skills. I scored 154 in one of them. Average score between tests tends to be around 151.

    • Agreed, the tests that measure your vocabulary are pointless. I usually try to choose the logical ones, so I hope you are appeased.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I love IQ tests but only because I'm good at them. Which doesn't strictly make me intelligent; it just means I'm good at IQ tests. It's been interesting watching my IQ change over time (it rose until I was 17/18, held steady for a few years, and I've been losing almost exactly a point a year ever since; some of it self-inflicted).

Where do you get them from, by the way? You're in the range where standard tests are little use because the number of questions you'd be getting wrong would be minimal and the granularity of the scale is severely compromised by that. You really need to be getting >= 25% wrong for the test to be accurate (meaning the 160, 180 or 200 tests and they're not easy to hunt down).

    • Yeah, I've only done internet IQ tests. I think I have done about all of them that I can find, but will readily admit that internet tests aren't that accurate. I may be a moron after all. Yeah, my IQ has continued to rise until now. (I'm almost 18)

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • It doesn't mean you're a moron. It may mean your IQ is actually higher than you think because internet IQ tests are only really accurate for IQs up to about 140. If you're scoring 161, then you're obviously above 140, but where you are above that 140 point isn't accurately determined by the tests you're taking.

You could go for the MENSA test, but I'd recommend avoiding MENSA as much as humanly possible. Anyone who'd join MENSA is not someone you'd want to know.

        • Thanks for the advice. :) Yeah, as hyperbolic as my original post is, it doesn't mean that I am obsessed enough for MENSA. I'm just a normal kid, looking to solicit a good discussion.

  • Eh kind of, people like to compete so it's natural. But can't you pretty much guess what it probably is? I'm pretty sure you can so it seems like your desire to have them take the test is to be able to say in certain, official terms how much smarter you are, not so much because you actually wonder what their IQ is, you wonder how much higher YOURS is than theirs. The whole score is probably what gets you, if your score is 161 then you can definitively say you are say 61 points smarter than Joe who scored 100...meaning you already think or know you're smarter than Joe, you just like to prove it in an official way. It's the same thing as people who like to show off their money or other such things. Just try not to offend people or push the issue too much, it's a sensitive subject.

But yeah, high IQs don't neccessarily mean anything. I mean, I'm a bit smarter than your average person, but it mostly shows up in knowing lots of useless facts and trivia.
