Is it normal to be able to effortlessly imagine/taste in your head?

So I can think of something, even something I've never tasted, and taste it perfectly in my head. For something I've never tasted, I still get an accurate taste. I don't have to think hard about the taste or the object, even a passing thought can involuntarily involved the taste. I've heard it's normal to do so if you're hungry or if you concentrate or if you can see and smell the food, but I don't have to do any of that. I asked two people if they could, both of them said no and one thought I was lying. Is this normal?

My mother claims that when she sees the image of something on television she can smell that thing. Sometimes I smell things that aren't there.
