Well, I'm not a member of the society ,but I think I can see why. From what I gather, furry art is based off of anthropomorphic creatures, either physically or mentally. Furry art often take what is usually "the best of both worlds" by combining both desirable human traits and animalistic traits, and combining them into a single figure. This can range from humans with bunny ears to wolves with a human stance.
This could also be either a sexual fetish or non-sexual, but the biggest thing people need to know and remember is that most people don't get to choose their likes and dislikes, and very seldom can ever change it. It's always better to accept and regulate it I'd say.

For this, I'd say that it's normal.

I'm also into Furries & I wear a tail at my side occasionally.

Yes it is normal; the only reason it doesn't seem so I think, is because it isn't widespread and popular and hasn't become a household term.
