  • 25% of people who try heroin will become addicted (and it will ruin their lives). That is an outrageously high number compared with other drugs. So the truth is that you could well be one of the 75% who can try it and not get hooked. As a recovering heroin addict myself, who has been on methadone for 15 years (and can't get off methadone, even though I haven't used heroin for years now), I must warn you that you are playing the most dangerous game possible. Once upon a time, I had more willpower than anyone I knew. I was a very high achiever. But the drug destroys all that. It destroys the very things that you think are immutable about yourself. It corrodes your spirit and turns it into a metaphorical demon. You're forced to become a liar and people treat you like scum, which makes you constantly defensive and indignant, i.e. a pain to be around. It's awful. Please stop now.
