Is it normal to be 18 and not have your driver's licence?

I got my driver's permit when I was 16 years old yet have barley practiced. Every time I get behind the wheel I get nervous and it triggers my anxiety (I have struggled with anxiety since I was 14)

My mother constantly complains that I don't have my licence and says that I should have gotten it two years ago like everyone else, it really hurts my feelings because I feel like she's bullying me or talking down to me, making me feel bad. I've tried to explain it to her but she seems to just ignore me.

Is It Normal?

  • Got mine at 21, it wasn't a bad choice. Wait until you're ready :>

  • I'm 19 and I don't intent to start driving/learning to drive until I have a proper job, so I can actually pay for lessons, haha. Plus, I'm in uni so it's hard to get a job that can work around uni. It doesn't really bother me that I don't have a license though. Getting the bus everywhere is cheaper anyway. xD

  • If it makes you feel better, I'm 17 and haven't practiced driving in over a year and a half. I personally don't have anxiety problems, I just don't feel comfortable driving. I tend to move at a slower pace than everyone (I took longer to learn to tie my shoes and ride a two-wheeled bike, as well). My dad often complains, too, but just forget about what your mom or what anyone else might tell you and just move at your own pace. :)

  • A lot of people in their 20's don't have even a permit. You'll be fine, don't let your mom pressure you. It's probably what triggers your attacks in the first place.

  • Just go at your own pace and practice at it. You will get better, trust me.

  • I hope it's normal! I don't even have a permit and I'm 20! Haha x

  • I developed anxiety issues about 8 months ago, and I am on Celexa for them now, but I didn't know driving could trigger attacks. I know that anxiety is different for every person, but going on a long drive and listening to some relaxing music is very relaxing for me! Sitting at home alone is the thing that triggers my anxiety!

What do you find is calming for your anxiety? Anything specific?

  • I'm 20 & i haven't got a licence and no intention of getting though my mum keeps nagging me to get one my reason for dragging is coz i'd get a licence to drive her car kinda pointless ain't when she uses it all the time my only motivation would be to see a car with my name on it i'll so driven to get that licence. you take as much time as you want 18 isn't that much to be honest your mum should cut you some slack.

  • I was 17 going on 18 when I got mine. You don't absolutely have to get your license, it's just more convenient to not have to depend on others to take you places.

  • I'm 20 and I still only have my learner's permit... I hate driving and it makes me so nervous, but I'm forcing myself to get my license just to have it, I probably wont drive much after that. Just review all the street laws and etiquette, learn defensive driving, you should have nothing to worry about... you control the vehicle

  • It's a phobia. You'll have to overcome it if you want a license. If not, you could always get a bike. Cars aren't everything. I'm at the age where I can get a drivers license, but I don't won't it. Cars freak me out and I don't think I'd be able to handle all of the stress. My family was bitching about it until I flipped out at them. Now they don't really bother me about it. I plan to get a bike instead. Your mother is being cruel about this and needs to stop pressuring you.

    Good Luck:)
