While not necessarily "normal," (whatever that means), it is a wise practice.
1) Condoms - they have the benefit of preventing pregnancy AND transmission of STDs (assuming they're used properly, from pre-application to completion of the sexual act).
2) "The Pill" - generally considered to be nearly failsafe in preventing pregnancy (assuming they're taken with FULL commitment to the regimen prescribed by one's OB/Gynie.
Properly used together, the likelihood of pregnancy is nil, and transfer of STDs (as relates to condoms) is also quite low.
