Is it normal to always hear a soft, high pitched sound?

For as long as I can remember I have always heard this constant soft and high pitched sound. I usually don't notice it until I concentrate on it. Sometimes the pitch changes a bit, or becomes pretty loud for a few seconds until it is soft again. Is this normal?

  • Yep, good old tinnitus, there's no treatment so you might as well get used to it like the rest of us. :)

Be careful with loud noises and music, they increase the damage. Use earplugs if you're near speakers at concerts or shooting guns or sitting in a server room all day long. Really loud A/C near my desk at work has made me have to break out the earplugs again, I get up and my ears ring more than normal... sigh...

  • It's a medical condition tinnitus, I have it too, had it ever since I was a kid. It's not dangerous but it can be annoying sometimes.

  • I've had it too. It particularly got on my wick when I was trying to get to sleep. It's not dangerous, though, and fairly common.
