Is it normal to add salt to your water

I took a sip from my boyfriends water bottle the other day and it tasted incredibly salty, I asked why does it taste so bad and he told me he adds pure rock salt to his water EVERYDAY!

I know this can’t be healthy, and doesn’t salt dehydrate your body more??? He says he does it because it tastes better.

His skin is clear and he seems healthy enough...

Is It Normal?

  • Not normal and probably bad. But if they have a reason to actually need extra salt (like sweating a lot, eg from warm climate/exercise) I don't outright disrecommend it. Its probably still too much if they also eat salty food

  • What the actual fuck

  • There's already more salt than you need in the food you eat. Adding more shortens your life by causing mild hypertension.

  • Does he use Himalayan salt by chance?

  • Next time try to recommending your boyfriend to put MSG on his water bottle too. Bon appetit.

  • It can be good with a relatively moderate amount:

  • What the hell? That tastes fucking terrible I don't know how he survives that. Does he have some kind of sodium problem? I can't imagine why anyone would do this. Nowadays its pretty much impossible to not be consuming enough sodium.

If he has done it for a while without problems, he probably doesn't put much salt in there, or else doesn'talways drink saltwater. With enough salt concentration and only drinking saltwater he would definitely die.

How about ask him why and get back to us?

    • He says he just likes the taste, that’s all there is to it

  • People need salt to live. This isn't necesarily bad fr him. Salt does make you more thirsty, but if their isn't too much salt there shouldn't be a problem.

    • They do...and that is quite different from drinking salt water all day, every day.

Good way to say goodbye to your cardiovascular system and kidneys...

      • If it's only a little bit of salt, there shouldn't be a problem, but if the guys going around drinking sweat or seawater all day, then there is definitely an issue.

        • First sentence of the post implies otherwise. No more than a teaspoon of salt a day is upper limit of recommendations. Many foods contain salt already.

          • Your right. This guy should stop. I guess I overestimated the effect salt has on the taste of water.

    • Actually depending on the concentration, this could definently be a problem.
