Is it normal to act super happy about getting a gift you hate ?

It’s so thoughtful, it’s so kind of them, But deep down you know you just don’t have even an ounce of need, desire,or use for it. I usually still react with huge smiles, praise, and thanks because it’s still a nice thing they did. But I cannot help but feel like it’s the most disingenuous thing because I’m mascaraiding the true feeling of non-excitement of a gift I will never use. It would feel awful and rude to tell them the truth, so Is this one of those times where the truth isn’t needed? Is it just best to be happy and thank them for their kind act and move on? Is it normal to do that ? - to just always act happy and grateful for any gift even if you don’t truely like it?

"Super happy" is a bit of overkill. Can't you just be politely grateful?
I emphasise things like thoughtfulness, kindness, etc.

Expressing gratitude for gifts we don't want or like is an example of the normal social grease we all use to keep things moving smoothly.

Unfortunately, it can result in you getting more of the same in future, but that's just the way it goes.

Pretending to be thrilled is unnecessary, and it quite possibly comes across as false. Expressing gratitude should be sufficient. If the gift-giver is someone who always gives you gifts you don't appreciate, it might be worthwhile making a mental note to drop hints about things you definitely would like in the run-up to future Christmases and birthdays.
