Long enough that what I saw scared the crap out of me. I was camping with my dog when I posted this, not very far from civilization but far enough that the clear sky was lit up with stars. It was completely silent except for a light hum.
We were sitting by the fire and what is usually a peaceful, beautiful, serene place place for me, suddenly became overwhelingly dark and lonely.
The hairs stood up on the back of my neck and I have never felt more alone. When this feeling came, my dog whimpered, ran to the tent and scratched to get in. This is a dog that would try to stay out all night if she could.
I didn't even tend the fire. I ran to the tent as well, I got into bed and covered up and wrote that.
I felt if I had continued to look skyward I'd reach a point of insanity that I would never escape from.
IIN the universe terrifies me

It's going to be a while before I look again.
