  • I'm glad I wasn't made to read it in school. When I chose to read it for myself, it's one of the few books where I was completely tuned in from the very first paragraph. I just loved his voice.

    You could class Holden as spoilt, depressed, bratty, childish, but I forgive him all of that because he's really, really funny. I love the way he sees things.

    I know it's a sad book with a sad ending but it's been a book I've loved from the moment I started reading.

    What's strange to me is a female liking it. You're the first I've known of. People I've recommended it to have found it very alien and very male. But I think most men have an element of Holden, most of us are blocked off and don't see things as plainly as women, and most of us have similar viewpoints whether we express them as wittily as Holden or not.

    P.S. I was made to read Great Expectations and despised it. I love it now, though.

    • I know this is quite old and I shouldn't be practicing necromancy and stuff, but I just wanted to let you know that I'm a girl and that book is really a Bible to me, I can relate to almost every word of Holden's and I feel like I really get him.
