As far as the magazines go, they have pictures of women on them mainly to attract WOMEN. The readers of most of those magazines are females, so they advertise with the front cover that "HEY! THIS IS A FEMININE MAGAZINE!". This is an extremely common advertising tactic.
You'll notice that companies DO advertise to one gender or the other. If we're talking about commercials about tools, cars, sports or other "masculine" products, you'll find that the focal characters will be males, to establish familiarity with their male audience. The same goes for commercials about cleaning/hygeine products (gender neutral and female oriented), child care products, clothing etc. but for women. A female will be the focal point of the commercials.
As for those boys in McDonalds... I didn't hear the conversation, but considering most boys are sexually interested in girls and are at a point in their lives where their hormones are practically running them, obviously girls are going to be on their mind.
