perhaps tied to the old concept of the male / being the bread winner.
I've never heard it like in this post, however in Australia we have a similar terms to with 2 meanings. My ol'lady can refer to either my wife or my mum, and my ol'man refers to my father or a woman may use it describe her husband. All are affectionate terms.
Is it normal that this girl is calling my boyfriend "papi"???
