Is it normal that they never found any record of jack dawson ?

I just find it strange that they were never able to find any historical records of Jack Dawson. I understand that Rose changed her name to Dawson after she got off the Titanic but you would think they would have been able to find some record of Jack's life either in America or in Europe. It almost makes me think they made up his character just for the movie. I mean what other explanation could there be? There must be some record of him or his family somewhere

      On second thought, i confess that i too thought Jack Dawson was a real person. He is my role model, that is why i live in a boat
