Is it normal that the own family is a bunch of greedy liars?

My parents died when I was young but instead of inheriting what belongs to my younger brother and me my family took all of what was left for us including the house and everything in it and putting us into an orphanage.
They even laughed after I left the room when they were talking about my parents' death. I feel betrayed by all of them.
