Is it normal that still feel guilty about the death of a kitten?

I was about 4 years old and one of the feral cats in our neighborhood had a lovely little snow white kitten...my brother and I instantly named it Snowball. I was holding it and put it down to play in the grass. No sooner that I did this, the neighborhood bullies came up with their giant beastly dog Naru..a mutt that looked like a cross between a Wottweiler, Pitbull, and a Great Dane. Within seconds, Naru had Snowball in his jaws and I wanted to reach down and save Snowball but, I instantly knew that if I put my small fingers in front of that dog's mouth that they would be bitten off. I watched Snowball being torn to shreds and to this day I blame myself. Is it normal to hold onto this guilt into adulthood?

i've just signed up, and so being new here, i don't see any dates, and don't know if any of these are relevant anymore. if this is very old, then please forgive and ignore me, but in case it isn't, i just wanted to chime in. i think it's completely normal for you to feel this way. as tori said above, you are not guilty for this, so you shouldn't think you are, but i believe it is normal to feel this way. there are things like this that have happened to me when i was younger that i feel guilty about. apparently i somehow killed a bunny we had [my mom has told me i "dropped a bureau on it" and i've still not figured out what that means] when i was young enough to not even remember anything about it, and i feel guilty about that as well. in addition to others, of course.. sometimes feel guilty about things i have said years and years ago that i later realized probably came off sounding the wrong way, not quite what i meant, and they're people that i don't talk to anymore or anything, still feel guilty about it though

even though you didn't know any better, it's normal to feel guilty. i feel bad about when i was a baby and picked kittens up and threw them. :/

Oh no! That must have been horrible for you. You shouldn't have guilt. Those evil kids with their dogs are to blame. My heart goes out to you. It's hard to let go of something that you have thought you did something wrong.

That is a very, very sad story! No that is 100 percent normal to still feel that guilt. It would haunt me too. In fact just reading this story I will probably be haunted by it for awhile. You have a big heart and that is a good thing. Spend your life being good to others and animals and try to realize it was not your fault. If you still know those boys I'd be sure to give them a piece of your mind.

  • Your moral support really helps. :o) Sometimes things that others feel are nonsense or childish regrets can really stay with you and haunt you your entire life.
