I don't have this problem too often and I live in California.
I DID date one fellow who literally used every reason to turn a discussion into a religious conversation. "My brother in law is trying to get a PhD in music studies!" "Did he go to BYU?" "I don't know." "Don't you think it is funny that BYU is named after Brigham Young and" -goes into rant about how all Mormons are ignorant lunatics who believe that men landed on the Moon in 1846 or some shit.
"Man, I love fried chicken!" "It's because you're from the South." "Yeah, we love our fried chicken :D" "You guys like incest too! Which is perfect because you're also a Mormon!" -goes into ranting about some bullshit with incest and how Mormons do it constantly and some shit about the south too. Whatever.
I wouldn't worry about it. Most of the atheists I know literally do not give a fuck what I believe and don't give a fuck when I talk about my church or say things pertaining to God or my religion. To them, it is just something that I do, like the way I like to talk about Star Trek or my love for fried chicken, and the line is drawn at my being an ass to THEM for THEIR beliefs that they talk about as well sometimes and I reciprocate.
However, most of my atheist friends are mentally stable adults, so it's not a problem.
Is it normal that some atheists bother me a little too much?
