Is it normal that people think i am a female because of how i write?

So, this is the deal. I have posted many stories and comments in this site. I have entered the chat a few times as well. As my username is quite ambiguous, it is hard to tell I am male or female.

Yet, I noticed that unless I mention that I am indeed male, someone always asks if I am a female. Actually, sometimes people just assume it directly. This itself wouldn't be so weird, but I if you do take into account the "internet mentality" that everyone is assumed to be male unless the opposite is proven, then it is a little more unsettling. I truly don't understand why do I give such a feminine aura with my writing style.

In real life I am just a regular guy, with an absolutely normal level of manliness. Maybe sometimes I do try to be fair and non-sexist when I speak about women (which apparently is not normal for a regular man). But apart from that, I really don't know what's wrong.

So, anyway, I was just wondering if this is normal and if anyone ever had a similar situation. Does anyone here ever gave mixed vibes about their gender by their posts?

I'm in a very similar situation. People on this site occasionally default to "she" if they don't know I'm a "he", presumably because I don't project my masculinity in the way that a lot of people would think of as "normal" (even though I think of myself as masculine) so the male switch never flicks on in their mind.

A few people on this site have thought I was black when in fact I'm white, and I've had a whole range of guesses at my sexual orientation. I've got a long history of being put into categories that aren't part of my identity, is what I'm saying.

It genuinely doesn't offend me in the slightest if people ever get parts of my identity wrong :) It's not important and really it's impossible to guess.

    • Many have asked me if I am gay as well. Others have tried to guess my age. Usually they say that I am too young... yet sometimes they say I am old as well.

That's why many of my posts sometimes start like this: "I am a XX year old straight guy...". (Unless I am pretending to be someone else of course, haha)

Oh, I forgot about age. People are often surprised that I'm as young as I am, and people have sometimes undershot my age as well.

I think the Nicki Minaj profile picture I used to have didn't help, nor did my once pink username.

I would have thought you were female just by how you wrote this post. There is something delicate and gentle about the style of your writing, but not in a bad way. You're a descriptive writer with clear mastery over the English language. Most people stereotypically assume that men (especially on the internet) will give off a brutish vibe instead of being eloquent and articulate which you are. And just for the record, I am a man, lest someone similarly accuses me of being female :>

A similar thing happens with me, except it is the other way around. I guess I have a masculine style writing/aura because many people online have been under the impression that I was a male. It doesn't really bother me and I can't really remember wether or not it ever bothered me, though it probably did because, I used to be extremely sensitive about things.

This is ironically sexist of me, but because I am a girl, I often ASSUME that whomever I am speaking to in the Internet is also female. I actually didn't notice that until now, and now I'm hoping I didn't upset anybody.
This is probably what's happening to you.
    Oops.

Yeah people thought I was a girl on this site before. I have a picture up though of how I look so people will at least know my gender.

Meh, sometimes it's easy to tell and sometimes it's hard. I sometimes get it wrong but then again I am a bit silllly.

I like feminine men. There good to go shopping with. They know what colors will look good on me.
