I usually think the attempts and decision are very much a way of opening one's self up for help for the last time, especially if it's announced in some way. I'm reminded of a man on the Golden Gate bridge (I forget his name right now) who was spotted by a police officer. They talked for a while and he didn't jump. There are hundreds of stories like this. I just remember this one in particular because they reunited years later year and it was in the news not too long ago.
