It is sad, very sad to think about it, because we miss them, but I think the very fact that we miss them that much means we thought of them as true friends. But sadly, people have to go different ways, and live in different places, and our life situations make us drift apart, and we get busy, or lose track of how to keep in touch with them. But, once in a while, we manage to track them down again, and planning get togethers is always something to look forward to with the ones that we manage to find again.
