It happens all the time. Generally, in my experience it is more common for people to assume that anonymous people on the internet are male. Though it seems the opposite happens as well. I'm a guy and some people here actually used to think I was female. I don't know if it was due to the nature of the topics I respond to or the way I word my responses, but I think is all comes down to gender stereotypes that we subconsciously apply. I was told I was too "nice" to be a guy. I think most people are assumed to be male because people are generally more blunt on the internet and maybe that is something associated with males? Your guess is as good as mine.
