Very few straight guys will ever tell another male friend they love them. At the very least, he cares about you and isn't afraid to show it (which isn't a bad thing, it's just unusual in society. Gotta love stereotypes). He could be joking and is just comfortable in his sexuality, or he may care about you as more than just a friend.
If he's really a friend to you he's not gonna "bro-rape" you, even if he does feel attracted. Approach the subject gently if you really want to know, but you should decide in advance whether or not you can accept him if he does feel attracted to you.
Try to start a conversation about gays and see how he acts. If you get homophobic answers, he's hiding something.
