  • Fat shaming is the last acceptable prejudice.

    Prejudice comes from ignorance.

Obesity starts with genetic and developmental bases which is compounded by physical, emotional and societal issues. It also comes from living in an environment with the obesity promoting effects of the food industry.

The relationship between food intake and calorie expenditure is way more complex than the "calories in, calories burned" equation. Our bodies have hundreds evolutionary mechanisms (genes) which have been honed to protect us against starvation and unpredictable food supplies. Any sort of stress (including emotional stress)on an individual causes those mechanisms to start hoarding energy. Not only that, but we live in a completely different world today than we did for the thousands and thousands of years while we were evolving. We now have access to food in abundance. The least expensive food available is processed and modified beyond recognition, leaving little to no real nutritional value - just sugar, salt, and fat.

To add to this equation there are other things to consider... there's a person's age, their job, their upbringing, who their friends are, or what neighbourhood they live in. All of these things contribute to the choices a person makes. For a lot of obese people, food is the only pleasant experience they have going on in their lives. Many obese people are depressed, even if they don't show it, and that depression is exacerbated by the shaming society throws at them. Stigmatizing can actually cause obesity.

Hating fat people is like hating any other social group; it's good for neither the object of hatred, nor for the people doing the hating.

Here is an important thing to remember: Everyone is different. Some people are fat and fit; some are lean and unhealthy. And yes, for some their weight is a health issue. Some people are unhappy with their weight; others don’t care. Regardless of anyone’s situation, it is no else’s place to judge.

        • Fight temptation? Every grocery store has fresh vegetables and healthy meats and fruit available. Temptations??? Are you serious?? Some people live where they are not sure they will eat everyday. Your pissed off that you live where there is too much food that is unhealthy to choose from. Well there is a lot of good food to choose as well. If you can't fight temptation then that is nobody else'sfault but your own.
