Of course it's normal. Some see asking as a sign of caring; others see it as prying into personal life. Everyone around you apparently takes the latter approach.
By the way, if you're 27, you are not doomed to a girlfriend-less existence forever -- assuming you would want to share your life with someone, that is. You say you see yourself as "someone who could have had a girlfriend" as if you're looking back on a ninety-year lifespan; you're still young. It's fine if you choose to live the single life, but that doesn't have to be the case if you choose otherwise.
It's unusual that you haven't ventured to connect with someone, but it's not that unusual that others haven't asked about it. Good for them for respecting your privacy.
