Is it normal that my teacher and i love the same band?

Today at school my teacher was looking at my work and she notices I'm listening to music and she asks " Is that Slipknot? " and I went crazy after that and I was like " No way! You love Slipknot too! ", at that point I went ahead traded my favorite songs and albums and so did she, we went as far as talking about our favorite Metallica songs, Korn songs and other bands.

I also found out shes into the same gothic rock bands as me, I found she also loves SoM and The Cure.

At that point I felt like I can talk more to her since I find we both like the same bands and have similar interests in terms of music. I actually never I knew would encounter a teacher who absolutely loves the things that I do.

I had sex with a teacher listening to Pink Floyd about 10 years ago, so there's that.

There’s a stereotype that only teenagers and goths like Slipknot but their appeal is broader than many people realise.

I’m glad you have a teacher you can connect with.

As they say: SPIT IT OUT all you wanna do is drag me down!, All I wanna do is stamp you out!

But also she told me she's been to a few Slipknot concerts when she was my age. I personally never went to their concerts even though I really wanted go to most of them when I was a kid.

Have you seen the live videos of Spit It Out? Corey gets the whole crowd to get down on the ground and jump when he screams “JUMP THE FUCK UP!”.

The second time I saw them I was with my then 17 year-old sisters so my 56 year-old non-metal head dad insisted on coming too. When it got to the bridge of Spit It Out before Corey said a word I felt a tug on my sleeve and saw him crouched on the floor yelling at me to, “Get down!” The things Dads will do for their kids...

The bands you have listed were very popular in the 90s and 00s. Your teacher probably came of age around that time. So if you like music from that era than you will probably find other teachers who have similar taste.

And as for Metallica... I don't think I've ever met someone who said they didn't like Metallica. That one is fairly standard.

Listen, bro, the golden rule about bands is that if your parents, a teacher or some other ancient, wrinkled, out of touch geriatric says they like them, the band is definitely not cool, and you shouldn't like it.

You need to find a some new favourite bands. Preferably, ones that nobody over twenty has ever heard of. Every band an old geezer like me is aware of (and that includes every one you list) should be dismissed as 'commercial sell-outs' by kids your age.

On one hand you're right. On the other hand, this also means that the only really cool music I listened to in high school was the shitty meme music my friends would force on me and I cannot accept that

You know I was joshing, right? 😁

But yeah, not entirely. There have always been people who are pretentious eejits about music and believe that anything popular is, by definition, crap.

I wouldn't be surprised if good part of the reason some of your high school contemporaries liked the meme music you mention is because older people found it incredibly annoying and stupid.

I know you were joking, I just wanted to apply the joke to my own life.

It's actually very rare for me to come across music that I outright dislike, but blood will be shed if I ever have to listen to Megalovania again

I'd never heard of Megalovania before, but just had a listen.

It strikes me as a good backing track for a frantic game, but just listening to it would rapidly drive me bonkers.

My tween daughter is probably familiar with it. It just occurred me that she asked me an 'is it normal' question a couple of months back about music. She wears headphones a lot of the time. They're volume-limited to save her hearing, and that also means that her mother and I have no idea what she's listening to. She asked me if I thought it was weird that she'd spent the whole day listening to a brief clip on repeat (it might have been from some TikTok thing).

I can't recall what it was, but I don't remember it being as jarring and manic as Megalovania. Still, I would have rapidly found it incredibly tedious to listen to the same forty seconds over and over.

Nonetheless, my response to her questions was along the lines of, "You be you, kid."

Nothing wrong with that at all! It's pretty cool, actually!

I tend to like older music from the '70s and '80s, so it was never uncommon to find a teacher or anyone else in a generation before mine that had similar taste. My parents and I even share very similar taste in music!

I had some bands in common with a few of my teachers. The Cure especially seemed universally liked at my school. Also, weirdly enough, one of our school resource officers liked The Dead Kennedys

It's a well-known band; this doesn't surprise me at all. I would name a band I'd be surprised if one of my teachers was a fan of it, but all the bands I like were mainstream-ish at some point in time.
