Is it normal that my roommate's cat's face smells terrible?

my friends cat had this. one day I smelled it's breathe and it was atrocious. she took him to her job the next day (works at an animal hospital)turns out he had very aggressive throat cancer, that just seemed to spring up overnight. she had to put him to sleep less than a week later :(
