Is it normal that my professor calls me ma'am?

I'm a 21 years old college student.
I'm trying to be friend with one of my professor who is my advisor, and SHE is only 29.
Even though I thought we were close enough, she still calls me ma'am and I don't feel uncomfortable with my professor calling me ma'am.
Is it normal that she calls me ma'am?

Your professor is telling you politely that you are a woman of rank, station or authority.
Perhaps you are a female of nobility.

Why are you creating a division in society?

I agree. 'Nobility' should be construed to mean, "1 : the quality or state of being noble in character, quality, or rank", and not the second definition, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

          'Nobility' is earned.

I approve and encourage your definition of nobility.

It is not a division if none are excluded but for the lack of their own positive action.

My teacher always used to call me 'Sir' whenever I tried to correct her. Bloody woman.

One of my favorite history professors used to call me "Chief." I miss Dr. Moretta, he was kinda crazy!

Would you have preferred madam or damsel?

Hell no! I felt like he was being respectful in a funny ironic way. I liked the level of familiarity we shared. There's something about crazy history professors that I hold very dear. I enjoy being like one of the guys whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Despite my having studied ballet for nine years when I was growing up(ballet is actually quite grueling) I pride myself on being in touch with my masculine side despite my über girly name. Yes, that's my real name.

Right on! I'm Catholic but I'll give you a Mazel of the day.

She's probably just trying to maintain an air of professional conduct.
