As mentioned before there teeth are always growing and they need to keep them short so they chew. They sell block of wood at pet shores specifically for them to just chew up. If he still chews on the metal bars alot, maybe it'd be better for you to switch him to another cage. My sisters hampered used to chew on his bars occasionally. My cousin had a few hamsters tho n she had them in a fish tank with one of the screen covers on top, it may not be as interesting for you son not being able to see him crawl thru tubes n all that, but it will stop the chewing at night of it keeps your son up at night. Just make sure you get him some wood blocks to chew tho since he won't have the bars to grind his teeth down on then.
