Is it normal that my friend wants to have asperger's syndrome?

Let me start by saying that I have Asperger's syndrome. If you don't know what that is, it's a form of autism. Anyway, I have this one friend, and she's like obsessed with the fact that I have it. The only reason why she even started talking to me is because my cousin told her about my asperger's. I know it's not a "healthy" friendship, but I don't have friends because people think I'm weird, so I settle for her.

So she always tells me that she wishes she were like me, and that she wishes she had asperger's too. I try telling her that it's not a good thing to have, and how hard it is to live with it, but she keeps insisting that I'm super lucky and she wishes she had it too. I really don't understand why someone would WANT to have a developmental disorder, or any disorder at all. Does anyone know what could be happening with her?

Is It Normal?

  • Maybe she wants to fit in with you? If she likes you, she might want to know how you feel, or to establish some common ground between the two of you.

However, the problem is lack of education. On TV, we see 100s of AS sufferers achieving great things, and they often cite their illness for helping them to think in different ways to other people. What we don't see are the 99% of AS sufferers who face huge difficulties in overcoming the disorder. When we don't know that most AS sufferers have a harder life than non-sufferers, it is no wonder that people often see AS as a desirable thing.

  • Your "friend" probably wants to have AS so that she can feel "unique" or "special". Another potential reason could be that she wishes she had a psychological condition to blame bad behavior on (as a lot of people tend to do on the Internet).

  • I have a friend who says she kinda wishes she had it so she could blame her awkwardness on that...I just give her a blank stare to let her know she is being awkward. I think some people like that don't really understand what it really is or they wouldn't say that. It's sorta like in elementary school when one kid breaks his leg and everyone pays him a ton of attention and another kid says they wanna break their leg, too. But they don't realize that casts itch, u can't play at recess and crutches are a pain in the butt...as well as the armpits...not even close to the same situation, but I was trying to make a point. just be a good friend and maybe she'll realize that she doesn't need a disorder to make her special.

  • I saw a TV programme that said normal intelligent people could never win the Nobel prize for Maths etc. The winners of genius prizes must have AS, so maybe she wants some genius to rub off on her.

  • You know, dump her. It doesn't matter if you don't have friends (or a lot) because I don't have a lot nor AS and and I'm content.
