Is it normal that my friend thinks this?

I have a friend, and once discussed this matter with her. She would abort a baby if she found out that this baby would be mentally challenged/sick, or would have a severe handicap. She calls its the survival of the fittest. She said if everyone would do this, only the ones with good genes would survive. Mankind would not have to spend all the money that is used to take care of them, overpopulation will be reduced, and it would benefit mankind overall. I thought it was just cruel of her to think that way! I could not believe my ears? Are there more like her?

  • Chances are the baby would abort itself before she had the knowledge that this was a possibility. All those tests you take to determine these results are not 100%, it only means there is a potential-not that it will happen. Why do you think miscarriages happen? Nature does a pretty good job of determining "survival of the fittest" without some dumb human judging what this means. Nature does not need our help, your friend is deluding herself if she thinks that is a simple decision.

This would have no effect on overpopulation as the world isn't plagued with deformed people. Uneducated women without access to birth control is a bigger problem.

  • Her outcome is correct but it doesnt mean its the right thing to do. Yes it would save alot of money but what is money at the end of the day? Its just paper. Your friend is a fool if she thinks paper is more valuable than a living thing.

  • I agree with your friend 100%. Keeping mentally challenged people/babies alive is a waste of taxpayer money and a waste of space. I would abort it too.

  • I both agree and disagree. I totally agree with the population thing, but I wouldn't have the heart to let that happen

  • I agree with your friend. life is hard enough for healthy people, so why bring a person into the world with all the odds stacked against it. Disabled people are treated cruelly by society, they suffer discrimination & bullying, & I wouldn`t want to put any child of mine through that.

  • Her argument for population control is bullshit, as the majority of people are born without disabilities. If you really care about population control, mass genocide would be a much better route than killing a minority of fetuses.

  • Wow, ive actually never thought about it like that, but yeah i would definetly agree with your freind. Alot of times though u cant tell if they going to have downsyndrome or whatever till after they're born and by that time it would be illegal to get rid of them.

  • She is actually right, but the problem is that it is not up to any human to decide whether another may live or die.

    • "Survival of the fittest" has nothing to do with intelligence. The sole criteria is an individual's capacity to produce fertile offspring. That's why the extroverted are technically the most fit even though on average they're relatively unintelligent. They have more sex and make more children.

  • Yeah, I know many people who would do that

  • She doesn't need all that justification. It's sub-human, so treat it that way. The only reasons humans are any more important than any other animal are because of things like abstract thought, high intelligence, personality, etc.

If a human is mentally challenged and can never achieve that, or so sickly that they could never last long enough to grow up and achieve that, they're worthless.

And yes, I am advocating the destruction of stupid people. I imagine the pulp that used to be their bodies could be used as a fine glue to build our bridges.

  • I don't agree with abortions but if I was pregnant and found out my child would have something severe wrong with it so it can't enjoy life like I have then I think I'd abort. I wouldn't want a child to have to go through that; not be accepted by society, struggle to do things we take for granted, just enjoy life but the whole "survival of the fittest" thing is a bit harsh...I suppose you wouldn't really know what you'd do until you was put in that situation.
