Is it normal that my friend killed his gerbils...

Well he bought 3 gerbils, he was ok with one litter, he learned to separate them by gender but he had to deal with the second litter.
Right after the first litter the parents had sex again and the female is most fertile then.

So he killed half (3) of the litter. Is It considered cruel on his part? or is it ok because he cant support them (he says), and has no space for them and he wouldn't want them to suffer/not have food because he can only afford exactly what he has now.

By the way i cant take them(cats) and no one else wants them because I've been helping him try to sell them on craigslist and from word to mouth.. but no one wants them. we live in south Florida..

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • No Sell them, give them away, advertise on Facebook and the neighbourhood, if all else fails like it has this time tell the ASPCA you can't support them, although that way they might eventually be put down , killing them like that is cruel, the situation itself is

it's the owners responsibility when keeping animals to either take precautions to stop something like that from happening if you know you wouldn't be able to cope, or make sure that if such a thing were to happen that you would be able to handle it, 3 animals had to be killed becuase he failed to be responsible for the animals under his care, may sound harsh but it's true

  • Why doesn't he just separate the parents?

    • he did, but he didnt want the mother to kill the babies because the very first litter he did that and right after the mother killed all the babies, most likely due to stress. so he read online and it said keep the father there until the babies are able to see (16 days +-), so this was all so he didnt have to end up with dead babies.. but we did separate them. theres a male cage, and female cage. its just the second litter is too many, and weve tried everything.. no one wants them, and everyone has cats....

  • In the future have him give the gerbils little, tiny condoms and instructions how to use them.

  • Really stupid idea on his part.
He should have just sold them.

  • Animals belong OUTSIDE. He could have just brought them to a nice, secluded, wooded area and bid them farewell. But that would have been way too obvious.

Your friend should have killed himself. The life of any given animal is worth more than his anyway.

  • I would tell some one. He'll kill you next

  • ya its normal as long as he did it humanely and not crulely.

  • Just because you have cats does not mean you can not have gerbils too, have them in another room where the cats would not be allowed.

  • This is horrible and upsetting, how does anyone even go about killing little animals ...please don't answer that. He could even have just let them free maybe but to actually kill it yourself sounds really weird. But letting them free isn't that great either, he could have just given them to a pet shop...

    • Are you serious? Let baby gerbils free? How long would they last?

      • Yes I am serious. I am not saying it's a good thing to do. But if I were clueless I'd let them free over actually killing them. I just don't know who can kill a little animal.

        • Right...so you'd rather have an animal die slowly from starvation and being unable to take care of themselves than for someone to end their suffering within seconds?

          • Unfortunately sometimes it's necessary to avoid suffering and in my opinion it would be better to kill them than let them free to starve or be killed by a larger animal

        • Setting them free would make sence if they were adults, but baby rodents cant even walk.

  • Sounds like something that is more acceptable in the south. I don't see it as that cruel but perhaps it could have been prevented. Poor little guys.
