Is it normal that my friend is going to hurt himself to get respect?

(The question for this is "Is my friend normal?" not me) So today in school, my friend's ex-girlfriend falls on the gym floor and cracks her head open. A bunch of people were crying.

I talked to my friend after school and he says "I'm going to hurt myself tomorrow." I asked him why and he said people might treat him differently. I told him that he'd look like such an asshole if he did something like that, and that if he did, I'm not going to be his friend anymore. Now he won't talk to me. Is this normal? Is there anything else I can do to stop him?

    a fake accident will surely bring real pity, but it won't bring respect. it's stupid and manipulative. everyone hates a manipulator.

    Yeah, that was a little mean, IMO. But he sounds like a loser.

    You're technically supposed to report things like this to the police, even if it's self-harm and not actual suicide.

    I used to cut myself but I would never tell anyone what I was planning to do and if they noticed my injury i would make up some excuse. No I am NOT an emo! There is something envirogarting about the pain and flow of blood- it use to pschyche me up- also the fact that you are "strong" enough to hurt yourself and endure it. Instead of tatoos i gave myself some cool scars. If your friend is telling you in advance and shows off his injury then he is just looking for attention which is pathetic but not so dangerous. Its more dangerous if he does it in secret. By all means continue to be his friend and don't ditch him.

    I think he's probably tryin to get attention. But you shoudn't tell him that you won't be his friend anymore cause that will increase his chance of doing so. You should be there for him and talk about it.

    Is he really doing it for respect or attention?

    It is normal if he's desperate for the attention that he wants but not to the extreme like nearly killing yourself.
