Is it normal that my friend has a english accent?

To clarify, we both live in Australia. He has never been to England (or Europe) and his parents were both born in China and have thick Chinese accents. But for some reason, he speaks with an English accent.

Cultured Aussie accent can sound English. I used to get asked if I was English a lot. It was weird. I have a friend who sounds American, despite never going there as a child. She blames being raised by TV.

When I tried to speak French in Canada they laughed at me because I had a Parisian accent. Your friend probably learned English from someone who was English.

Completely normal for non native speakers of a language to develop an accent that is different to the one associated with their current home. Their accent will be formed whilst they learn to speak the language, so will be very dependent on what sources they are using. That's why you hear lots of American sounding English speakers who have never set foot in America - their tutor was probably an American.

Odd, maybe he had an British-English speaking tutor?
